Sometimes you just need a day

A week ago, my boss told me to pick a day off.  Today was that day.  A Tuesday.  I picked today because my daughter had to have a cavity filled.  (#sadface  #firstone)  Since I’d have to take time off for that anyway, I figured it would be easier to take the whole day.  So……Tuesday it was!

Unfortunately, I had a last-minute meeting thrown in at 7 a.m. for a review committee, so it involved a whole lot of shuffling around for Hubby this a.m.  Add a little bit of early a.m. chaos and some cold weather=brutal.  Happy to report that the world didn’t end, everyone made it to school (eventually) and I made it to my meeting on time with no loss of life or limb.  #winning

To really do the day right, after my meeting I made a breakfast date with one of my oldest BFFs (chronologically speaking).  Followed by a nice long walk with our pup, it was a good, GOOD way to start the day off!

Then I got to work.  A variety of tasks, but I have been extremely motivated by little miss thang, Kathryn Whitaker.  If you haven’t been following her Instagram account and Instastories you’ve missed out.  She is the Catholic Martha Stewart of the blogging world–seriously, if you need some party ideas—she’s crazy good!)  Now.  I DO love this gal, twang and all….she’s even sweet in person, in a wheelchair with a broken patella at the Edel conference (next time girl, we’re gonna hang!), but I do NOT share her attention to detail or focus.  I am a solidly “ish” person—get the task done, but usually no plan, just mayhem until it’s finished and often the finished product is good-ish, but not perfect.  I also tend to get a little scattered when faced with really large projects—shiny objects and all, however…..it all gets done and often it is truly a miracle that it does.  And you know what?  I am ok with that, truly.  It works for me.  So, while I was truly fascinated with Kathryn’s stories and progress as she simplified her house, I felt ZERO envy.  I did, however, feel a motivation that our house DEFINITELY needs a good solid purging and now I have somewhat of a plan in mind.  (music to my Hubby’s ears)  This won’t be accomplished in 10 days, but over the next couple of months.  I also think if I asked Kathryn to be my accountability partner in ANYthing, she’d straight up whip me in shape.  So, I’m a little scared to go that far, but maybe…..just maybe!!   baby steps

Today, I started off small.  One section.  Cleaned out an armoire that is destined to go to a new home in the near future and made a trunkful donation to our church’s thrift store.  This also gave me an additional tool for my mobile office (AKA purse), so I am truly on fire now.  Look out!!!

After that, I finished up some smaller to-do tasks, read some of my current book “The Pearl that broke its shell” and hit the bridge for some quick steps to finish up my 10,000 steps.

Summits and sunsets

Today we put our boy on the plane back to Florida for a few days rest and lawn mowing before he heads to the Keys with his girlfriend’s family.  Tough life, right?  However, that also marks the downward slide of this amazing vacation.  And that’s ok.  It’s been phenomenal.  A favorite compliment to us this week was “we look like we belong here”.  True.  You never know what God  has in store for us and looking back 10 years ago, I would never have pictured this.  Ever.  Man,  God IS good.  And full of surprises.  So, who knows!

Yesterday, we let the kids sleep in and then spent the day at Mt. Cranmore enjoying the ropes course and zip lines (ok sort of—it was a great workout, but a few of us are not height fans and were thrilled to be done with that part!), ski lift (amazing views, cool breeze and lost sunglasses found again after a return trip up the lift), mountain coaster and general enjoyment of the ski resort during summer.  We were able to spend time with Hubby’s cousin at his super cool home followed by a yummy Chinese restaurant afterward. We were fortunate enough to catch the sunset on the way back home on the Kancamagus Highway.  It was a wonderful way to cap off the day and end the boy’s mountain vacation.

Mt. Cranmore-summer fun

The boys summited Mt. Washington the other day.  I still have no pictures yet, but they had a tremendous experience.  Adequately prepared, they experienced the crazy weather that accompanies an enormous mountain from 70 degrees at start to 30 degrees and socked in with wind at the summit.  Periods of visibility to less than 200 yards to completely clear within 10 minutes.  Lunch in the AMC shelter and a break from the weather with 25 other hikers.  8 hours of hiking.  Both agreed they were glad to experience the highs and lows of the weather and the challenge it brought as it made the glory of the summit that much more appreciative.  If that isn’t a great analogy for life, I don’t know what is.  Nothing worth having comes easy.

Today we will explore a bit more locally again, light hiking with the pup and prepare to head to PA tomorrow to visit with my mom and her husband again before we head south and home.

So, for now, I’m going to continue to soak up this porch, this weather and this time.

Blessed.  Truly.

For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory that is to be revealed to us.

The girls are getting ready to spend time with my mom this week annnnnnnnd my sister and her family while my nephew is in a baseball tournament in Cooperstown so they have some busy and fun-filled days ahead of them.  Anticipating that, I took the girls and friends to the beach for the night to celebrate that precious 12 year-old’s birthday.   What that boils down to is this:  Beach, Pool,  pizza lunch at 230p.m., cake for dinner, grapes and carrots for snack, nighttime walk on beach and late bedtime.  Followed by waking up for sunrise, walking to waffles across the street, pool swim and everyone back in bed at 9:15 a.m.  I’m anticipating a rally for a last minute beach time or dragging girls home by noon.  For now, I’m enjoying my view, the sounds of the ocean and silence….sweet, sweet silence in the condo.  😉

The birthday that lasted a Week!

Our  youngest turned 11 last week, however, her birthday had the misfortune to fall during a tremendously hectic weekend and so we dragged out a few celebrations in order to celebrate a joyous day, as every birthday should, and to also celebrate with the family in entirety.

  • On her actual birthday, we celebrated in the morning with a giant cinnamon bun from Publix for breakfast and opening of cards and gifts.
  • The next day at Mass we celebrated with a hoot and holler (thanks, Dad!) after Mass during visitor/birthday and anniversary announcements and hot dogs and pool time for Father’s Day at Popop’s
  • Monday, we celebrated with the annual birthday dinner of choice (Chinese takee outee) and family birthday cake (made by joint effort of big brother and sis–Red Velvet delicious!)

‘Twas a good day that the girls both had a Girl Scout event at the local water park after Mass for a relatively peaceful afternoon .

No complaints, yo!
